Nine Projects in Six States Honored at NH&RA Awards Ceremony

Washington, DC – October 7, 2014 —A distressed YWCA in Cambridge, Massachusetts rehabilitated to 103 SRO units for formerly homeless and disabled women; a former Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil factory converted into 174 luxury apartments on Richmond, Virginia’s Canal District; and the adaptive reuse of the historic Schmidt Brewery into artist lofts in St. Paul, Minnesota are among the nine winning projects for the 10th Annual J. Timothy Anderson Awards for Excellence in Historic Rehabilitation (Timmy Awards).

On October 7, 2014, National Housing & Rehabilitation Association (NH&RA), in association with National Trust Community Investment Corporation (NTCIC), presented the 2014 Timmy Awards during a ceremony and luncheon at the Boston College Club in Boston, Massachusetts.

“Over the past decade, we at NH&RA have worked hard to grow the “Timmy” Awards program into the prestigious awards program that it is today,” said Thom Amdur, Executive Director of NH&RA. “That is why it is so gratifying to recognize such an innovative group of projects on the program’s tenth anniversary, one of the most impressive groups of projects we’ve seen in the ten year history of the “Timmy” Awards.”

The “Timmy Awards” are named in memory of J. Timothy Anderson, an architect and developer who was an early innovator in the adaptive-reuse of historic properties and a staunch advocate for historic preservation. The awards were created to highlight outstanding real estate projects that involve rehabilitation of older, historic buildings, primarily using state or federal historic rehabilitation tax credits.

Projects are reviewed by a multi-disciplinary panel of judges that includes developers, transactional consultants as well as an architect and preservation advocate.. Scoring is based on overall design and quality, interpretation and respect of historic elements, innovative approach to construction and use of building materials, impact on the community, sustainability, and financial and market success of the project.

The judges for the 2014 awards include:

  • Josh Anderson, Cedarbend Consulting (Wenham, Mass.)
  • Ross Freeman, Pioneer Group, Inc. (Topeka, Kan.)
  • James W. Igoe, Preservation Massachusetts (Boston, Mass.)
  • John L. Kelly, Nixon Peabody LLP (New York, N.Y.)
  • Nick Ratti, CohnReznick LLP (Boston, Mass.)
  • Karl Stumpf, RTKL Associates Inc. (Miami, Fla.)
